RECORD PROMOTION GUIDE

ARTIST ROYALTIES

Sadly, when an artist gets signed to a label, he or she receives somewhere between 8 and 13 points. What that means is 8% to 13% of the retail sales price, after the record label recoups the money it puts out (the advance, the sample clearances, the producers, usually half the cost of the video, any cash outlays for the artists, etc.). The artist has to sell a lot of  units to make any money back. In this section of the Record Promotion Guide CD you can see an example of a relatively fair record deal for a new artist with some clout in the industry and a good negotiating attorney as well as a fairly accurate accounting of what the  end result of one record releases royalty pay back look like in reality for the artist. The single record release that realizes HIT RECORD status affords the artist a few years of constant concert and personal appearance opportunities (where the real money for artists is).
